Kalahari Melon oil is found in our Face oil and Moisturizer. Our Kalahari melon oil is fair trade certified and sustainably wild harvested from Northern Namibia as part of a community empowerment project.
The Kalahari melon (Citrullus lanatus), or tsamma melon in Khoisan, is a wild watermelon that is highly adapted to surviving drought and the harsh environment of the Kalahari Desert. This wild melon is the biological ancestor of the common watermelon now found Worldwide.
Archeological evidence suggests that the Kalahari melon has been used for over 4000 years. The San use the melon seed oil to moisturise their skin and encourage hair growth, while the pulp mixed with water is used as a sunblock.
THE KALAHARI DESERT
The Kalahari Desert is covers 900 000 km2, stretching over Botswana, Namibia and parts of South Africa. Derived from the Tswana word Kgala, meaning "the great thirst", or Khalagari, meaning "a waterless place”, the Kalahari has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent surface water.
